Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a procedure where tiny needles penetrate the skin in order to create superficial wounds that stimulate the production of collagen and other growth factors in response to small areas of injury.
This very safe and effective procedure may be used to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and stretch marks without the pain of epidermal abrasion. At lower depths, micro-needling can also be used to treat rosacea and scarring.
How is the procedure performed?
A sterile cartridge containing 12 tiny micro-points is attached to the micro pen. Your dermatologist will apply a thin layer of topical gel to your skin and select the appropriate treatment setting based on your unique needs. Next, in a single motion, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding until the entire treatment area has been covered. This process results in thousands of superficial microscopic channels throughout the entire treatment area stimulating collagen production.
Micro-Needling Post procedure
Immediately after your Micro-Needling procedure, do not take any anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, and Advil. These agents will interfere with the natural inflammatory process that is critical and responsible for skin rejuvenation. Follow these simple steps:
Day of procedure: No lotions, makeup or other topical products on your face before the procedure. After your procedure, your medical provider may apply a skin moisturizer with sunscreen. You may clean your face with a gentle cleanser before bed.
Day 1: On the next day, you may clean your face as usual and apply makeup, lotions, and other topical product. Stay away from exfoliants or glycolic acids that can be present in cleansers, as these can make your skin very dry after the procedure. We recommend use of an approved sunscreen SPF 30 or higher.
Day 2 to 7: Within two days following your Micro-Needling procedure you will notice skin dryness and flaking. This is due to an increase turnover of skin cells. During this time we recommend that you apply a hydrating moisturizer.
If your medical provider used the micro pen around your eye area you may have a little micro bruising that may exist for three or four days. This may be covered easily by makeup.
Days later your skin will start shedding. These are skin layers that would regularly shed a week later, but the Micro-Needling brings this skin to the surface sooner. During this process your skin will shed and be dry.
Days 7+: A week after the Micro-Needling procedure, most patients note that their skin is smoother and more radiant.
Results vary, but usually a course of 1-3 treatments (maximum of 5 depending on the condition being treated) is typically recommended. Results may vary from patient to patient.
