KYBELLA

KYBELLA®is the first and only FDA-approved injectable drug that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness, the so-called “double chin.”

Submental fullness impacts a broad range of adults, including both women and men, and can be caused by aging, genetics and weight gain.

Patients concerned about their submental fullness have not had many non-surgical treatment options, until now.

How Does KYBELLA® Work?

KYBELLA® is a non-human and non-animal formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally – occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.

When injected into the subcutaneous fat, KYBELLA®causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After the aesthetic response is achieved, re-treatment with KYBELLA® is not expected.

What Should I to Expect During the Treatment?

KYBELLA® is delivered to the area of fat under the chin through a series of specifically placed tiny injections with a fine sterile needle.

Consultation and treatment happen on two different days. On the day of your treatment, the area will be cleaned and a pattern of injection dots will be applied under the chin.

The area may be iced before and after and a topical numbing agent may also be applied for your comfort. No anesthesia is needed, however we will often administer a local anesthetic injection to the area to minimize discomfort.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Depending on the amount of fullness present and results desired, the average patient would require two-to-four treatments to see significant results. Few patients notice any result after one treatment. Treatments are scheduled no less than six weeks apart.

What Should I Expect Post Treatment?

The area may feel sore, “jiggly,” full or heavy from the product and swelling from your body’s reaction to the product. The area may appear larger than before the treatment.

This is typical. Once the product is absorbed into the system, the area will look more like it did prior to the treatment.

Are There Side Effects to Kybella Treatments?

The most common adverse reactions were swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and temporary hardening of the area. Less common side effects include nerve injury resulting in uneven smile or facial muscle weakness, temporary trouble swallowing, superficial skin ulceration/erosions, loss of skin pigment in treatment area.

Side effects typically resolve themselves in one-to-four weeks without treatment To avoid nerve injury, KYBELLA® is not injected into or in close proximity (1-1.5 cm) to the marginal mandibular nerve, salivary glands, lymph nodes and muscles. Cases usually resolve without treatment in an average of six weeks.
